History

Green Acres Memorial Park was developed in the 1950s by Henry Maag on Central Avenue in Bloomington. It was designed using what was then a novel approach to a cemetery: a park-like property with lush lawns and a vast array of gardens in which to honor loved ones.

Green Acres Memorial Park is also unusual because it was built all at once and not in phases. For this reason, available grave sites are not limited to select areas of the cemetery property, but are instead located throughout each of our unique manicured gardens. This means that you have more freedom in finding the right resting place for yourself or your loved one.

Green Acres Mortuary was built on the grounds of Green Acres Memorial Park in 1973. Together, they've provided the people of Bloomington with funeral, memorial and cemetery services in a compassionate manner that's always professional.

Green Acres Memorial Park

Situated on 60 acres, the park-like Green Acres Memorial Park offers a picturesque permanent resting place in Bloomington.

Burial options and unique gardens

Our well-manicured cemetery offers standard ground-burial options with flush-to-ground monuments, memorial and cremation benches, mausoleums, private family estates and more.

Green Acres Memorial Park has several pretty gardens, including the Veterans Circle, which has a monument with U.S. armed forces medallions and an American flag. The Veterans Circle is also available to police officers, firefighters and other civil servants.

The Guardian Angel columbarium was designed for the interment of cremated remains. Green Acres Memorial Park also has a cremation garden as well as a garden devoted to members of the Jewish faith.

Religious statues and more

Water feature at Green Acres Memorial ParkThe Good Shepherd Garden includes a serene lake and fountain along with a Carrara marble statue inscribed with the 23rd Psalm.

There are several other statues throughout the cemetery, including a monument of Our Lady of Guadalupe and a 9-foot statue of Jesus Christ, along with additional water features that add to the memorial park’s tranquil atmosphere.

Pictures convey a lot, but we invite you to come see the cemetery for yourself. Please call us if you'd like a guided tour.

Holiday decorations

At Green Acres Memorial Park, we understand that holidays are a special time to remember and celebrate your loved ones. In order to accommodate our families during holidays, we allow holiday-appropriate decorations on grave and memorial sites in addition to the normally allowed floral decor.

Currently, this program is in place for Valentine's Day, Easter, Mother's Day, Memorial Day, Father's Day, Independence Day, Halloween/All Soul's Day, and Christmas/New Year. During the appropriate months, you may find details about this program, including allowable dates, in our events section below. Please feel free to contact us at any time for additional information.

A caring part of the Bloomington community

We are engaged members of the Bloomington community, hosting funeral-planning seminars and memorial events that are open to the public.

We hold 2 Memorial Day services: a mass in the morning and a memorial later in the day. The memorial service is arranged with the help and support of local chapters of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Our Día de los Muertos celebration in November includes face painting for kids, refreshments for all and a mass to remember those who have passed on.

In conjunction with the Bridge Church of the Nazarene, we host a candlelight service each December. Any family who wishes to many place a candle on a loved one's grave. Then, we gather at the top of a hill and look out over the cemetery while someone from the church leads a service of reflection and love.
